History

For centuries, Cedar Key's beauty and adventure have drawn pioneers to this tiny and charming island. As far back as the early 1500s, Native Americans inhabited this enchanting islet, followed by sailors and traders who settled here in the 1700s. Spanish pirates claimed Cedar Key in the 1800s, just as the island was establishing itself as one of Florida's most vital seaport communities.

The 900 or so full-time residents of the island are proud of their home's history, handing down stories and traditions from generation to generation. Those traditions and memories continue to shape the community – including the development of Cedar Key Village.
